Representing Neck and Back Injury Victims

Trauma to the neck and back after such events as a car accident, swimming pool accident, construction accident or slip and fall accident is not uncommon and can lead to serious spinal cord injury and permanent disability. All neck and back injuries should be taken seriously because of the risk of paralysis, permanent disability and even death.

Serious symptoms of neck and back injuries include:

  • Extreme neck or back pain
  • Neck, head or back pressure that will not go away
  • Weakness or paralysis in any part of the body
  • Inability to move arms or legs
  • Numbness, tingling or loss of sensation in the hands, fingers, feet or toes
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Difficulty with standing, walking, balance or coordination
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Head or body contoured in an unnatural or awkward position

With any of the symptoms above, assume that a spinal cord injury did occur and take the following steps:

  • Call 911 immediately
  • Immobilize the head, neck and shoulder to prevent movement
  • Do not attempt to move the person unless they are in danger (such as in a burning vehicle or another immediate zone of danger)
  • If the person needs to vomit, roll the head, neck and body as one unit so the individual rests on their side (keeping the head, neck and back in line during rolling)
  • If the person is not breathing, proper CPR may be required
  • If the person does not have a pulse, begin chest compressions
